We are very close to the headwaters of the Columbia and Missouri river systems. With a short automobile ride you can fish the Salmon, Big Hole, Selway and Clark Fork Rivers in Western Montana and Northern Idaho. Truly a smorgasbord of fishing opportunities. Rubber rafts are available locally for rent. Fly lessons are also available from local professionals. Guided float trips can be arranged from one of our many local licensed outfitters. The local rivers hold mostly rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout, but the Selway and Salmon rivers have some great salmon runs
Non-resident Montana licenses are limited and available by lottery. These licenses must be applied for through the State in February for drawing in March. Bird season opens around the first of September as do general archery and some special permit rifle hunts. Bear can be hunted in both spring and fall. Elk and deer season begins late October and continues through November.
This region of the Rocky Mountains is loaded with minerals, rocks and gems. Crystals and garnets can be found by even the most armature rock collector. The Sapphire Mountains make up the east side of the Bitterroot Valley. As their name suggests they contain pockets of sapphires and many other gems. Sapphires are among the rarest gemstones in the world. Virtually every known color of sapphire is mined in this region. There are places near our lodge where the public can try their hand at washing for the precious gems.
Wildlife viewing is at its peak in the winter but is available year round. It can be done from both automobile or skis Summer - Horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking are premo in the summer months. Almost every time you get out on the trail a wildlife photography opportunity presents itself. Wild flowers start blooming in the valley in April and start continue their way to the higher elevations until July. Oh yes ... lets don't forget fishing!
